Work

I dread Mondays.

It's a sad reality of my life right now.

My work situation is very difficult
and frustrating at the moment.
As most of you know,
I am an ESL teacher at a Korean community center.
And as the resident specialist in young children,
my days generally consist of the ABC's,
storytelling time, and lots of hand sanitizer.

Doesn't sound that bad, right?

And to be perfectly honest, it's not.
It's not that bad.
But,
it's been not that bad
for a long time now

It would be very hard for me to explain
how exactly my job sucks,
and I really don't want this post to turn into complaining,
even though I'm really good at complaining about my job.

I just wanted to be able to document this part of my life,
for remembrance's sake and also in light of
the commitment I made at the beginning of this year

While reading through my Google Reader this morning
I came across a quote that my dear friend posted on her blog.
The quote is from a man named Steven Furtick
and it was exactly what I needed to hear today:

“The situation around you may look nothing
like the vision God has put inside you.
But by the power of faith,
you can turn your small beginning into a grand finale.
Here’s the way Jesus put it in Matthew 17:20:
‘I tell you the truth,
if you have faith as small as a mustard seed,
you can say to this mountain,
“Move from here to there”
and it will move.
Nothing will be impossible for you.’

In this frustrating, cross-cultural,
unfulfilling, mundane, ever-shifting, and unstable job
I want to
choose faith.
I want to
choose love.

 O LORD, help.

  1. Prayers! I know how you feel. I am in the same situation and sometimes it feels so utterly hopeless, but there is hope! I love that quote! One of my biggest issues is just being happy where I am. I am really working on this right now. Anyhoo, thanks for this reminder!

  2. I just found your blog, and I KNOW it was meant for me to read today. I DO understand. I work with children, and I have a hard time explaining to those closest to me how much I dread Mondays. So much so that Sunday night I get moody. I have become one that complains a lot. I'm sorry you are going through this. Every single day I journal and try to focus on those around me instead of internally on how miserable I am with my job. It has helped some. The quote you posted along with scripture is amazing. I'm going to copy it down and put it on my inspiration board. I pray things get better for you!

  3. I decided a long time ago not to hate on Mondays. Today is your chance to start fresh for a new week. Make it yours!

I love that verse! I remember a song about when I was little at VBS :)

  4. Aw sorry your not totally enjoying your job right now, that is tough, but your friend is right, i mean what it can do to shape your character and oh how the Lord can use you in that position Ferial!

The verse that always helped me when i felt similar ways about my job was the one about work as we are working for the LORD NOT MAN. I don't know what I would have done if it weren't for that verse...Colossians 3:23, if you aren't familiar off the top of your heard, write it out and I promise it will refresh your spirit at work!

  5. Love the quote - just perfect, it might end up in my house somewhere. I am sorry it is so tough right now, I think it is a great resolution to choose love, and thankfulness. That needs to always and forever be the cry of our hearts. Add to all the work stuff that living overseas is just plain hard sometimes and there is nothing you can do about it. I feel your heart, and relate. Press on.
